RESEARCH

Since weddings have so many elements, I collected as much reference as I could in all of the categories I’d need to consider. Luckily I’ve been thinking about my wedding since I was probably fourteen and I had a pretty clear creative vision.

MONOGRAM

I started my design process with the monogram. I was drawn to east Asian red signature stamps and luxury brand logos. I’m typically a very structured person and I loved the idea of the monogram having a clear holding shape but organic lines inside of it. I wanted something that looked organized but still warm and hand made. I sketched and arranged our initials (SG, CJ) in so many different ways and got frustrated and let me mind roam around my bedroom. My eyes landed on a Diptyque candle that helped me get to the final design.

INVITATION DESIGN

The wedding venue is a historical train station in Downtown Detroit, MI. I was inspired by train tickets, boarding passes and other travel related documents. I love the tight grid and small bits of information that they hold. I also pinned a Chanel Fashion Week invitation that was inspired by a ticket that really informed my design. It felt like the perfect combination of transportation and luxury that I was going for. I referenced other Fashion Week invitations, specifically searching for white space and monogram usage inspiration.

I plan to hand stamp the monogram and write in the number of guests to add a human touch.

COLOR

Both my Fiancé and I wear mostly black and like to keep things monochrome. The base of all creative will be black and white, with color almost exclusively coming through in florals. Purple is my favorite color, so that was a no brainer, but I was careful to balance warm and cool hues.

This is an active project and I have so much more work to do!
